Production Cycle Costs
I was really surprised at the content on Patagonia’s Footprint Chronicles website. It allows you to view the path each product takes around the globe and offers data on the production.
I ended up at the website because I was considering buying a fleece. Here’s the data:
Energy Consumption - 143 MegaJoules (equivalent of burning one fluorescent lightbulb for 93 days)
Distance Traveled - 11,170 miles
Carbon Dioxide Emissions - 66 lbs!
Waste Generated - 8 oz.
My first reaction was to forget about the fleece. I don’t need to own a product that has harmed the environment so much. But this is the only company I’m aware of that actually publishes this information. Kudos to Patagonia! I have to wonder how much harm other manufacturing companies are doing in order to satiate our appetites for trendy clothing. I sure would love to see that data!
In the meantime, I’ll hold off on the unnecessary clothing purchases.
